Juurakko is a Finnish word meaning the roots of a tree. As is suggested by this name, the music of Juurakko makes use of several roots of music: Afro-American blues, contemporary Finnish folk music and improvisation. The lyrics spring from old texts from Finnish mythology as well as from everyday life. The unique sound of the Juurakko band is a mixture of highly skilled a cappella singing combined with the sound world of the kantele, harmonium, bowed lyre, guitar and some utility articles modified into percussion instruments.
Laura Kaartinen – vocals, harmonium, melodica, percussion
